Atrial Ablation: Getting Atrial Fibrillation in Sync with the Rest of the World
Daniel P. Melby, MD
Cardiac Electrophysiologist, Minneapolis Heart Institute
The incidence of atrial fibrillation escalates in patients over the age of 60. The number of people living past 60 is ever increasing, and the risk for developing a-fib increases with the co-morbidities that the older population is living with. This presentation offers updates in the treatment of atrial fibrillation and the MHI atrial fibrillation program.

Integrative Therapies Break
Meghan Hatch, Healing Arts Therapist
Penny George Institute for Health & Healing
Experts in integrative therapies will present three short breaks during the day to promote self care and healthy living. This first break, presented by Meghan Hatch, will focus on stress reduction.
Stem Cell Research in the Cardiac Patient: Restoring a Heart Function
Timothy D. Henry, MD, FACC
Director of Research, Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation
Interventional Cardiologist, Minneapolis Heart Institute
Associate Professor of Medicine, University of MN School of Medicine
Stem cells have the remarkable potential to develop into many different cell types in the body. In many tissues they serve as a sort of internal repair system. Physicians and researchers at Abbott Northwestern Hospital have been investigating the potential for stem cells to be used to repair hearts damaged from myocardial infarctions and heart failure. Come and learn the current state of affairs of this groundbreaking research.
Therapeutic Hypothermia: Lessons Learned from the Cool-It Registry
Michael R. Mooney, MD, FACC
Interventional Cardiologist, Director of Interventional Cardiology, Minneapolis Heart Institute
Post cardiac arrest neurological damage is often devastating to the patient and family and affects 295,00 patients a year in the US. The ANW- MHI program is nationally known for advancing the standards of care for post cardiac arrest patients using therapeutic hypothermia. Come learn what others have found groundbreaking in our approach.

Integrative Therapies Break
Gail Ericson, PT, Clinical Exercise Specialist
Live Well Fitness Center at Abbott Northwestern Hospital
In this second of three short integrative health breaks, Gail Ericson will provide information about physical activity as a key component of self care and healthy living.
Getting to the Heart of Diastolic Dysfunction
Durand E. Burns, MD, FACC
Cardiologist, Minneapolis Heart Institute
Heart failure is a major public health problem, with an anticipated life expectancy of 50% at 5 years. While many health care providers focus on patients with systolic dysfunction, or impaired ventricular contraction, less attention is paid to those patients who may have a normal ejection fraction, but suffer from diastolic dysfunction, or impaired ventricular relaxation. Learn more about this often forgotten aspect affecting some patients with heart failure.

Integrative Therapies Break
Susan White, Dietician
Minneapolis Heart Institute Outpatient Clinic
Our last integrative therapy break of the day will focus on healthy eating. Susan White will offer practical strategies that tie in both to the Blue Zones concepts and to the snacks we’ll have at our afternoon break.
